I created this hand embroidery while on residency at Art Villa Garikula in Georgia. It was inspired by a little hiking trip to a chapel on the hill opposite of Garikula. From afar, the chapel seemed abandoned but once we got there we found a little altar full of Russian Orthodox icons there. It was a strange atmosphere, quiet and beautiful but a little eerie as well, with a waxy smell to it and little candles all over the floor and flies buzzing around. A strange contrast with the open space and air of the hilltop view. It inspired this tiny piece of embroidery, like a death mask-beautiful, but a bit eerie and cold as well.
The embroidery measures 3 by 4 cm, is created with silk threads on silk fabric. This piece has been sold.
