In August/September of this year I was an artist in residence at SERDE in Aizpute, Latvia, to create new embroideries based off the nature and landscape there, and this post shows one of the six works from this project. You can see the full project page and read about the concept here, this page is meant to show some more details on the individual embroidery.
Before I went to Latvia, I didn’t really know what to expect, but I was happily surprised by the absolutely beautiful, colourful nature and the space! Coming from the Netherlands, which is a small country with a lot of people where we have to be very effective with our space, it was amazing to see so much space being used simply for nature and how much the Latvian people appreciated and needed their nature space. People working in their beautiful gardens, walking through the fields and the woods, picking mushrooms and apples, harvesting their own food, going fishing and swimming in the lakes on a sunny day..being outside and having space to breathe and be alone with your thoughts outside seemed a very important part of life and it was something I wanted to capture in the landscape of this beautiful, calm lake.
