I created this piece while on residency at Art Villa Garikula, in Georgia. During that residency I created several embroideries of people with natural elements, looking for a balance between nature and human, the individual and the natural collective. This one is a portrait of a young lady with iris flowers spreading over her bald head. I wanted to convey a sense of hope and longing in her face, as she’s gazing into the distance to something beautiful, something that makes her happy for the future. The flowers add a sense of femininity and romance to the painting, as if they are part of her being, like hair or skin.
It’s created with silk hand embroidery on silk fabric, the embroidery measures 4.5 by 5.5 cm and the total piece measures 13 by 16.5 cm.
